Greyville Poly Selections

Race 1 – 1200m (Maiden Plate)

A small field to open proceedings, and as the saying goes in horse racing, ‘the smaller the field, the bigger the upset’. Head Girl is having her peak run and has consistent form. She has been in the maidens for a long time, but this could finally be her time to win. I like her EW odds for two places, so it is a small bet.

Suggested Bet – Head Girl EW @ 6/1EW Place

Race 2 – 1400m (Maiden Handicap)

Dynasty’s Last racing career has been moderate at best. Her runs have been fair but not spectacular. I like her to improve for two reasons: she gets the blinkers fitted to focus better and carries a low weight of 50.5kgs. If she gets some luck in running, she can go close.

Suggested Bet – Dynasty’s Last EW @ 9/1

Race 3 – 1400m (Maiden Handicap)

MC Dazzler should win this race, but at 5/10, he represents no value. For many, a better alternative would be to banker him in the Pick 6. If you are looking for a single EW bet for this race, I think Accumulate is the right horse. He has gone off the boil lately but is a blinker strike. He will be fitted with the blinkers for the first time, which could help him focus and not get spooked easily. It’s a small EW bet at double-digit odds.

Suggested Bet – Accumulate EW @ 12.5/1

Race 4 – 1200m (Maiden Plate)

Railroad tried 2000m last time and did not see out the distance. Now, back down in trip, he can continue his decent form. Rachel Venniker takes off 1.5kgs; with 58.5kgs, he should be competitive. He is a longtime maiden but should soon find a win to reward him for his consistency.

Suggested Bet – Railroad EW @ 10/1

Race 5 – 1200m (FM 65 Handicap)

I believe trainer Louis Goosen is setting up Drive By to win this race with his speed and low weight. If you look at Drive By’s recent runs, you will see that he has been racing in 1600-1900m events. Now, he is running in a 1200m race with just 50.5kgs. The plan is for him to go to the front and hopefully hold on at the finish. I expect front-running tactics, and if that happens, he should be good for a place off that low mass.

Suggested Bet – Drive By EW @ 15/1EW Win

Race 6 – 1200m (MR 98 Handicap)

Good Traveller (MR 96) was once one of the best young sprinters in the country. The once MR 120 horse has been struggling to rediscover his early potential. He is trying his best, and his recent runs have been fair. Ideally, he should be on the turf track, but he should also enjoy the poly surface. He should be too good for this field if he could rediscover his three-year-old form.

Suggested Bet – Good Traveller EW @ 8/1EW Place

Race 7 – 1000m (MR 68 Handicap)

Purple Powahouse has been a model of consistency, and we can ignore his last run. The seven-year-old may be getting old in racing terms, but he still runs well and tries his best. With some luck in running, he can provide a test to his younger rivals.

Suggested Bet – Purple Powahouse EW @ 5/1

Race 8 – 1900m (FM 70 Handicap)

It is a tough race to end the day, and finding a winner was difficult. However, after some form studying, I ended up in the camp of Doctor’s Orders. The three-year-old filly produced a good last run when she finished second. That race has been franked, and she can finish in the money again. If she can confirm that run in this type of field, she should provide us with some returns on our EW bet.

Suggested Bet – Doctor’s Orders EW @ 6/1
