Kenilworth Selections

‼☔ Note (last update at 03/07 09:30): The race meeting was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions. All bets were void, and the stakes were refunded.

Race 1 – 1100m (Maiden Plate)

Racing starts with a weak work rider’s maiden race, so if possible, avoid betting. However, I needed to pick a horse for the Punters Challenge and decided on Welsh Starlet. The filly has no form but carries a low weight in this sprint. In this weak field, if she can show any improvement, she should run into the money.

Suggested Bet – Welsh Starlet EW @ 6.5/1

Race 2 – 1400m (Maiden Juvenile Plate)

Pentolina should win this race but represents no betting value at 7/10. I prefer Bela Vista who is priced at 5/1. She ran an impressive second in her debut race but followed that up with a poor effort. If she can reproduce that debut run, she should fill the swinger positions in this race.

Suggested Bet – Bela Vista EW @ 5/1

Race 3 – 1400m (Progressive Plate)

It is a competitive Progressive Plate, so go wide in the exotics. Port Louis is an 8/10 favourite, but I don’t think the race is so clear-cut. Based on the big EW odds, I have to side with Rockpool. The four-year-old had a promising three-year-old career but went off the boil. He returns from a six-month break and should need this run. However, he is a quality horse; if he is fit to race, he can run into the money.

Suggested Bet – Rockpool EW @ 8/1

Race 4 – 1400m (Maiden Plate)

Landoftherisingsun is a 7/10 favourite here and should run well. I think he could get beaten, and I prefer Mr Belvedere. He finished a length behind the favourite in their last race, and they meet on the same weight here, but he had no luck in running. With better luck, and if he gets a decent start, he can continue his fair form and run into the placings.

Suggested Bet – Mr Belvedere EW @ 5/1

Race 5 – 1400m (Open Maiden)

Fairfield produced a good run in his last start and will come on from that race. He should strip fitter now, and he can confirm that run with another solid display. The three betting favourites are all weighted to finish close, so I prefer the value with Fairfield.

Suggested Bet – Fairfield EW @ 4.5/1

Race 6 – 1400m (Class 4)

Kelp Forest is searching for a hat trick of wins here, but the value is with Steinbeck. Steinbeck returned from a four-month layoff when he finished second behind Kelp Forest. He should be much fitter now and run a better race. He is 3.5kgs better weighted than Kelp Forest for a 2.25 lengths beating. That means, on weight turnaround, he should beat Kelp Forest. I like his chances here, and his EW odds provide value.

Suggested Bet – Steinbeck EW @ 6/1

Race 7 – 1100m (Cape A Stakes)

The featured race of the day and it is a competitive event. Go wide in the exotics and hope for an upset. I like Bereave to run a place, even with his top weight. He has fair form and can run into the placings with some luck. A good option is to take him to finish in the top three at 2/1. However, I also give him a small winning chance, so the EW bet is my preferred option.

Suggested Bet – Bereave EW @ 10/1

Race 8 – 1200m (Class 3)

It is another competitive race; you must go wide in the exotics. Escarpment has won his last two starts and is going for the hat trick. The three-year-old steps up in class but carries a handy weight of 56kgs. He is in top form and in good shape. With some luck in running, he should fight out the finish and can sneak another win against stronger opposition.

Suggested Bet – Escarpment @ 9.5/1

Race 9 – 1200m (Class 5)

I am trying to find a big-priced winner in the lucky last, and my studying found Black Path. The mare is not a consistent horse, but her last few starts have shown some improvement. She has been racing against stronger but returns to class 5 racing. If she can get her mind right, she can run well with some luck. Otherwise, it could be more of the same: a poor average run. She carries 52.5kgs and represents some EW value. It is all about luck in this race, so let’s hope she can send us home with a run for our EW money.

Suggested Bet – Black Path EW @ 26/1
