Kenilworth Selections

Race 1 – 1100m (Juvenile Plate)

Opening the card may be a juvenile plate, but it is a competitive field. Many horses have chances, and I won’t be surprised if a big odds runner outshines many of these fancied horses. I like Babelicious to run well here, and she is coming off a decent win. Her win has been franked with two subsequent winners from that race. She is in a good space, with 57.5kgs on her back, I expect her to run into the money.

Suggested Bet – Babelicious EW @ 8.33/1EW Place

Race 2 – 1000m (Maiden Plate)

Next up is a maiden sprint over 1000m, and I like the look of the filly Lucy Rocket. Her first two runs were promising, but she went off the boil with two poor efforts. She has been rested after those two runs and should be fresh and ready to go here. A filly taking on males, the three-year-old gets a weight advantage and carries 57.5kgs. I expect her to improve with that weight and can throw a challenge at her male rivals.

Suggested Bet – Lucy Rocket EW @ 10/1EW Place

Race 3 – 1200m (Maiden Plate)

Cliff Swallow has been costly to follow and was a beaten favourite in his last three races. The three-year-old is a consistent horse and always runs into the money. He lacks a strong finish and struggles at the final 200m. He is reunited with jockey Luyolo Mxothwa and can get the best out of the horse. The favourite We Have Touchdown is the horse to beat, but I prefer the EW insurance for a place return with Cliff Swallow.

Suggested Bet – Cliff Swallow EW @ 6/1EW Place

Race 4 – 1600m (Open Maiden)

Apache Chief has fair form and produced an excellent run in his last start. He did cost himself at the end, though, as he hung at the 300m mark. The quality of this field is not so strong, so I like Apache Chief to run into the placings. Should he reproduce his last run, he is a lively EW contender.

Suggested Bet – Apache Chief EW @ 5/1

Race 5 – 1600m (Cape C Stakes)

If you are playing any exotics on the day, I suggest you load up in this leg. Most of these horses have no form, and finding a winner has been tough. In the end, I sided with My Bestie, whose last two starts have been solid, and he looks to have regained his form. Once an MR 104, he has dropped in the ratings and is now an MR 73. He is having his peak run here, and if not too far behind heading into the straight, he can fight out the finish.

Suggested Bet – My Bestie EW @ 5/1

Race 6 – 1400m (Middle Stakes)

The featured race of the day is a competitive field. I like School Policy to run another good race. The filly has won three of her last four races and is searching for her hat trick. She should struggle to win based on weight turnarounds, but I think she is still the horse to beat. As a three-year-old, she is open to further improvement and could be ahead of the handicapper. I am happy to take a chance on her EW to prove that she still has more to come.

Suggested Bet – School Policy EW @ 5.5/1

Race 7 – 1400m (Cape B Stakes)

I expect School Policy to run well in the previous race, so I have to rate Callmegetrix here. The filly is taking on males in this race and has the form to be competitive. She finished behind School Policy in her last run, and if School Policy runs well in the Middle Stakes, Callmegetrix will be a top contender in this race. The three-year-old filly loves racing over course and distance, and she has two wins and a third from three races. She carries a handy galloping weight; I believe she can run into the money.

Suggested Bet – Callmegetrix EW @ 5.55/1EW Place

Race 8 – 1100m (Class 5)

Wylie Jack’s last few races have been good, and he has finished strongly at the finish. His issue is that he is always slow away, ultimately costing him race wins. If he can jump on terms, he should be a threat to his rivals. He is weighted to finish ahead of the favourite, Shifting Path, and represents the EW value in the lucky last.

Suggested Bet – Wylie Jack EW @ 6.5/1EW Place
