Race 1 – 1000m (Juvenile Plate)

Arjuna produced a promising debut run and was close behind in finishing fifth. She is the only filly taking on males in this race, but she is our selection thanks to the 4kg claim from the apprentice. Running with only 50.5kgs, she should be hard to catch at the finish if leading at the final 300m mark. At 11/1, she is an excellent EW value in the opener.

Suggested Bet – Arjuna EW @ 11/1

Race 2 – 1200m (Maiden Plate)

The Mikado produced an eye-catching debut run and then ran a poor race as an even-money favourite in his next start. He was very green in that run and switched strides throughout the finish. He has been rested for 11 weeks, and if he can reproduce that debut effort, he is a massive value runner, especially with Rachel Venniker taking off a further 1.5kgs.

Suggested Bet – The Mikado EW @ 8/1

Race 3 – 1400m (Listed Stakes)

You Bring Me Joy has a wide draw to contend with, but she has the speed to overcome that and get to the front. She ran well in Gauteng and then won her first start in KZN. She should be competitive in this draw and has Whistle The Tune to beat.

Suggested Bet – You Bring Me Joy EW @ 6/1

Race 4 – 1400m (Listed Stakes)

Great Plains is the horse to beat here, and he should notch up his hat trick based on his form. However, Havana Moon could trouble him, and after being rested for ten weeks, he should be fit and ready to go here. He finished just 0.5 lengths behind the favourite in his last start, and with expected progression, he could have more to come.

Suggested Bet – Havana Moon EW @ 7/1

Race 5 – 1800m (Grade 3)

It is a tough race to call, but in the end, we sided with Jordan. The three-year-old gelding has been running well lately, and he produced an impressive win against stronger. The manner in which he beat Durban July lurker Barbaresco means that if he reproduces that run now in KZN, he is a lively EW contender.

Suggested Bet – Jordan EW @ 9/1

Race 6 – 1400m (Grade 2)

Double Grand Slam is the banker of the card. She should also be the banker of many bettors in their pick 6s and jackpots. She should win this race, but we won’t be backing a 5/10 shot as a single money wager. So we searched for value on a runner who should place and found Celtic Rumours. Over the past 12 months, the filly has improved in leaps and bounds, increasing her rating from an MR 81 to an MR 106. Her last two starts were impressive against males, but now she is back against her sex; if she produces another solid run, she should finish in the money.

Suggested Bet – Celtic Rumours EW 8/1 Void – Scratched

Race 7 – 1600m (Grade 1 – Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge)

It’s time for the big one, and we suggest you load up in the exotics. Plenty of quality horses have winning chances, so go wide and hope for an upset. All of Main Defender, Sandringham Summit, Dave The King, See It Again, and Lucky Lad must be included. The race does not stop there; other bigger-priced horses are lurkers. In the end, we decided to make Lucky Lad our top selection. The three-year-old colt has transformed his racing after his wind op. He won impressively in his last two starts, and if he continues his progression and wins here, he will be a top contender for the 2024 Durban July.

Suggested Bet – Lucky Lad EW @ 5.5/1

Race 8 – 1100m (Non-Black Type)

King Of The Gauls produced a stunning win in his last start against stronger horses. He is still a progressive three-year-old and could have more to come. He should be the one to beat and should complete his hat trick of wins in this race. It is encouraging that Champion jockey Richard Fourie has chosen the ride.

Suggested Bet – King Of The Gauls to win @ 3/1

Race 9 – 1800m (Maiden Plate)

A maiden race to end the brilliant day of racing, and we are in the camp of the consistent filly Sweeter Than Honey. She has placed in all five of her last starts, and from a good draw of three, she should run another decent race.

Suggested Bet – Sweeter Than Honey EW @ 5/1EW Win
